Due to the sketchiness of this, I'd originally had it in with my scraps. But looking at it again, I think it more or less works as a finished piece. Not an overly good one. But I've seen worse.
I really like it. The way you've captured the flow of the dress is beautiful. The colour sceme you've chosen is really nice as well, it's kind to the eye.
I quite agree- aside from the quite too overused thought that I do think her quite pretty, there is something of a dreamer's demeanor to her. The wind tugging at her perfect-length hair and dress (sad that so rare are dresses these days, alas...) creates a feeling of both serenity and restlessness. Her holding the hem of her dress seems to be a matter of almost anticipation and comfort, as though she is staring off into the far distance and awaiting the unknown.
I've -got- to ask what medium you used! It looks almost like it could be conte, which is probably my favorite thing to work with besides a plain old #2 pencil. Though I wonder about the background. Photoshop methinks? The greenish greyscale is nice, and I quite like the almost smear-like effect on her dress of the lights. Ah well, shoot, I like it enough to fav it too.
Yeah, the medium is just Photoshop. I used 2 custom brushes that I use for almost everything. One is meant to give the appearance of a paintbrush (an effect which works to varying degrees, depending largely on how I use it. Sometimes it's not even remotely convincing). The other one is a brush I originally made for the specific purpose of painting rust and corroded metal textures. That didn't work out especially well, but it turned out to be useful for all sorts of other things, and it's the brush I use most often now.
The cropping (whether artistic or to hide the face) really makes this piece interesting and unusual. The brush strokes and use of exaggerated light and shade are also enviable...damn
It still seems hard for me to understand how art like that can be done in photoshop. I suppose what I mean is that I've always found it best to coordinate my hand and eye, and the computer is like this third step I cannot seem to figure out... except with writing, that, well... It looks almost like paint or conte, I tell you true- like you've taken a pallete knife and scraped a line of paint several times for the lower part of her dress. It's an awesome effect to have come from photoshop- so my simple advice is to keep practicing and becoming better.
I'm not exactly sure why, but for some reason, the part of this painting that really stands out to me is the angle and curve of the neck, and the chin....I have no idea why, but it makes the whole thing very graceful and serene.
